Marriage can be a very positive experience but sometimes it’s very difficult. The added pressures that face migrant families escalate differences . The shift in the balance of power and the financial challenges of supporting family members in the family of origin cause more difficulties in marriages for Migrant Families. Some couples have the added pressure of being separated by Immigration laws causing further strain and difficulty.
We want to support couples in their relationships whether they are preparing for marriage or they are already married.
We offer 1 to 1 Support for a nominal fee to cover our costs.
Need to talk?
All relationships have ups and downs, but sometimes they can get a bit stuck and it’s hard to talk things through or get to a positive solution. That’s when help from a skilled couple relationship support worker can make all the difference. Whether you are feeling things just aren’t quite right or whether you are encountering serious difficulties, we are here to listen and to support you towards a positive outcome.
Our relationship support service is delivered through one or more 50 minute sessions with you and your partner, or with you alone if you prefer. Sessions are usually face-to-face and are completely confidential. You will be given a regular weekly appointment which is yours for as long as you need it, as agreed with your support worker. How long you continue with support depends entirely on your individual need. If we feel that you require professional counselling then we will refer you to a professional marriage counsellor in one of our partner organisations.
All of support workers are migrants and have gone through a formal selection and training process, with ongoing professional development and regular supervision to ensure good practice is maintained.
Migrant Family Support is a registered voluntary organisation and we don’t charge a fixed fee for our support service , apart from an initial registration fee of £10 to secure your place on our waiting list. You will never be turned away because you cannot afford to give very much but we do ask all clients to give a donation in advance of each session of counselling. All our support workers are highly trained professionals but they receive no payment for the sessions they provide – giving their time on an entirely voluntary basis. However, in order to maintain the rent for our premises , their ongoing training, supervision and the overall service each session costs Migrant Family Support around £60. Our Appointments Service will ask for your first donation over the telephone when they are in a position to offer you an appointment and donations for all future sessions will be handled directly by your support worker.
Pre Marriage Support
Our marriage preparation day, Preparing Together, is a one-day workshop for groups of up to 15 couples. It is normally held on Saturdays . We can also facilitate a workshop in your church or group of churches .
Enjoyable, tailor-made ,revealing and rewarding, you’ll be encouraged to consider things you may not even be aware you need to think about. All in a safe, supportive environment, where no one is forced to share anything they are uncomfortable with.
During the day, you will learn how your relationship grows when you deal with important issues in a constructive and loving way. We cover a lot of ground, including:
- the importance of talking and listening
- how to negotiate and solve problems
- what you expect from your relationship
- how different cultures affect your relationship
- how the law affects your decisions ( Immigration laws )
- the way your family and childhood influence how you interact with each other.
All to help you cultivate a fulfilling life-long relationship
